How to Treat Gum Disease at Home

Do you see blood on your gums or teeth while brushing? This might be a sign of gum disease. Gum disease at early stages is known as Gingivitis where the gums are only affected. If the infection goes below the gum line into the bones, it leads to periodontitis. 

Both gingivitis and periodontitis are risky to your health. If untreated, it can lead to diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, pneumonia and cancer. Some of the symptoms of gum diseases are-

  • Red and swollen gums: Gum disease starts with inflammation along the gum line. You will feel tenderness or bleeding while brushing and flossing the teeth. 
  • Bad breath: Mouth is a home for bacteria that feed on the plaque. Bacteria release toxins that cause odor or foul smell.

Causes of gum disease-

The leftover food particles mix with saliva and bacteria that leads to the formation of plaque. If not treated, it causes tartar or calculus. These tartars are very hard to remove and can be eliminated by professional dental cleaning only. Few reasons are-

  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Crooked or overlapped teeth
  • Changes in hormones during pregnancy, puberty and menopause

  • Lemongrass oil

This helps in reducing the gingivitis and plaque. To make this mouthwash, mix 2-3 drops of lemongrass oil in water. Swirl in the mouth and spit out.

  • Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera can be used as it is instead of diluting. Do it for 2-3 times by swirling in the mouth and spitting out.

  • Tea tree oil

This helps in reducing the bleeding. Add 2-3 drops of tea tree oil into warm water and use like other mouthwashes.

  • Turmeric gel

Turmeric is used for treating many other diseases due to anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. Turmeric gel helps in preventing plaque and treats gum disease. Apply it on the gums and leave for 10 minutes. After this, rinse with water and spit out.

  • Oil

Oil reduces bacteria and plaque build-up that are the reasons for gum disease. Put 2 teaspoons of oil in the mouth for 30 minutes. Swirl it around and spit out. Then, drink a glass of water before cleaning the teeth. Oils can be used includes-
